WHEN CHRIST COMES

Review by Debbie Porter - 30th March, 2004

When Christ Comes If you would like to read this wonderful book by Max Lucado, you can find it at ChristianBooks.com by visiting the link below:

When Christ Comes

For most Christians, Max Lucado needs no introduction. His books can be found in thousands upon thousands of homes around the world and his way of using simple experiences from life to illustrate Biblical truth has been delighting readers for years.

So to recommend a Max Lucado book is really a bit of a no-brainer! It's on a par with standing up at a convention of chocolate lovers and saying that everyone should try chocolate because it tastes delicious.

We all know his books are beautifully written and always an excellent read. So what's to recommend?

Well, having just recently read "When Christ Comes", I truly believe that it deserves to be highlighted as the "Breath of Fresh Air Recommends" selection for the month.

We live in a day and age where there are numerous books available about "end times". Some are sensational best sellers or perhaps that should be "sensationalised" best sellers. Others are fairly dry dissertations that may be Biblically balanced, but reading them can produce the same effect as taking a sleeping tablet. There are also those that are just a bit fanciful and airy-fairy in their approach, touching on things that are outside the borders of Biblical truth. Then there are some that are very good discussions on the various points of view as to when and how all this may happen.

In the midst of the good, the bad and the ugly of this category of books, Max Lucado's "When Christ Comes" is a refreshing breath of fresh air.

The cover notes for "When Christ Comes" include these questions:

"Would you like to discuss the end of time and feel better because of it?
"Could you use some reassuring words regarding the return of Christ?
If you have some questions about the end of time ...
If you have concerns about what will happen to you ...
If you like to look to the end of time as a source of comfort and not chaos ...
YOU ARE HOLDING THE RIGHT BOOK."

In my opinion, Max has found the perfect balance in this beautiful book about death, eternity and Christ's return.

As an unsaved teenager, I was in the rather uncomfortable position of being someone who knew enough about the Bible to feel very anxious about the return of Christ. I would wake up in the night in fear about what would happen to me if the Lord came back right then and there. Where other teenagers may have been chewing their nails down in the middle of the night over whether their city would be blown to smithereens by a hydrogen bomb, I was chewing mine down over the possible imminent return of Jesus.

Thankfully, that great fear helped to push me into the loving and gracious arms of God and was definitely a contributing factor to why I finally turned to Christ for salvation and peace.

But the sad thing is that many Christians are still living with a certain degree of fear regarding Christ's return. The wonderful thing is that Max Lucado has managed to defuse that fear as he takes us on a 156 page journey of understanding the wonderful future that lies ahead for all who believe.

This book is not heavy or difficult to grasp in any way. However, it also shouldn't be brushed off as light-weight. The message Max shares is written in a way that speaks to both the heart and the mind.

While bringing this message of hope and encouragement to his readers, Max is not guilty of watering down the truth in order to avoid the hard issue of what lies ahead for those who haven't received Christ as their Lord and Saviour. In the chapter entitled, "Love's Caution A Day of Ultimate Justice", Max sensitively but honestly teaches the consequences we face if we choose to ignore the way of salvation.

The story Max relates at the start of that particular chapter makes an absolutely excellent point; but then all the illustrations Max uses throughout the book hit the mark perfectly. Some left me chuckling, while others brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. The mixture was exactly right from start to finish.

Speaking of finishing, the last chapter has a wonderful story about a piano and Fred the hamster. It's just a simple "oops" story that happened in the Lucado home while he was writing this book and yet Fred's mishap opened up the way for Max to bring "When Christ Comes" to a satisfying, joyful, heart-warming conclusion.

I think you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. Even more importantly, I believe that it will be a blessing and encouragement to you as you look forward to that glorious day "When Christ Comes the beginning of the very best!"

* * *

For those who want to take things a little deeper or to bring the message of "When Christ Comes" even closer to home, there is an excellent study guide at the end of the book with questions relating to each chapter for group discussion or personal reflection.
