Your Pain in My Heart

I long to make the sun come out ...

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
~ Romans 8:28 NIV ~

It used to be so easy
When you were oh so small
To put your world to right again
Whenever you did fall.

You'd cry and I'd come running
To set you on your feet,
A bandaid and a hug from Mum
Turned bitter into sweet.

There was nothing in those days
That Mummy couldn't fix.
I thought that it would stay like that,
As I cared for my two "chicks".

But as the years go rolling by,
The playtime scars do fade,
And in their place are deeper hurts
That no one can evade.

Oh I know you try to hide it, but
Your pain you can't disguise,
'Cause the smile that's on your lips
Doesn't make it to your eyes.

I want to kiss the "ouch" away,
I want to make things right.
But there's nothing I can do to end
What seems your longest night.

How I long to make it better,
Put an end to all your pain.
I want to make the sun come out
And dry up all the rain.

Instead I smile and gently say,
"Tomorrow will be brighter.
"Then walk away and pray that soon
This load will be much lighter.

At last down deep within my heart,
The lesson's finally learnt
Throughout this walk of life we'll find
There's times when we get burnt.

And only then will come the peace
That follows the surrender,
Of all our deepest fear and dread,
To Him, whose love's so tender.

For God alone knows what will be
The perfect way ahead,
Although it may be different from
The path we hope to tread.

Yet we can take assurance in
The truth of His dear Word
That not a single prayer of ours
Will ever go unheard.

Our Father cares about our lives,
Through both the good and bad.
He's promised to bring joy again
From times that are so sad.

So even though I feel your pain,
(Dear child it hurts me too)
I know that God will make a way
To bring you safely through.
