Love That Lasts Forever

Remember your first love ...

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love."
~ Revelation 2:3-4 NIV ~

In all the days of all our lives,
There are moments that shine bright.
Special times that mean so much,
With mem'ries we hold tight.

Of all those precious moments
Just a few are priceless treasure.
With radiant light they dazzle,
And have value beyond measure.

But in that tiny list of things
There's one that stands out clear
For it happens only once in life,
That 'first love' does appear.

All at once the world we knew
Has changed forever more
And even we don't seem to be
The way we were before.

Suddenly there's someone who
Has filled our mind and heart.
We want to know them inside out
And it's only just the start.

We rush to spend more time with them.
How we hate to be away,
For each moment separated seems
To somehow waste the day.

Ah yes, how sweet those moments are,
And how dear they'll always be,
Yet sadly, time may bring the curse
Of mediocrity.

Who knows just why it happens when
Those flames of love die down?
And romance wanes to comfort;
Brilliant colours fade to brown.

This change does not come quickly -
It's a subtle, creeping sway.
But then one day we find ourselves
A thousand miles away.

The choice right then is ours to make,
With two options now in sight:
Will we let the slide continue,
Or will we set this love aright?

"It's way too hard and way too late!"
Some cry in their despair
When they see that what they had has gone
And they really don't know where.

Well, yes dear friend, it might be hard,
It may even cause some strain.
But the blessing of first love returned
Is worth a little pain.

We have to take the time to think
About those early days
And do the things we did back then
Whilst in that love-filled haze.

Then that 'first love' will last for life
And no circumstance will sever.
So how much more should we all tend
God's love, which lasts forever!
