Service with a Smile?

A tasty snack for a boy with hollow legs!

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men."
~ Colossians 3:23 NIV ~

At last a moment's break and peace,
The lunch time meal was done.
The plates and cups were washed and dried -
Hunger's battle had been won!

At least that's what I thought and hoped,
With chores out of the way,
Now there'd be some time for me
To rest or maybe play.

But just before I left the scene,
He came racing through the door
Heading for the cupboard, crying"
Please Mum, make me more!"

"The omelette and the chocolate milk,
Well, they were really great!
And that icecream sure did hit the spot -
See, I emptied all my plate!"

"Oh, but still my stomach's hungry,
It just keeps right on a rumbling.
So could I have some more to eat
To stop its noisy grumbling?"

"A toasted sandwich might be nice,
Or a muffin would be yummy.
With ham and cheese, I think that it
Would satisfy my tummy."

"With his head stuck in the pantry
Matthew failed to realise
That every single word he'd said
Was a step t'ward his "demise"!

He didn't see the steam within
His mother start to grow.
But he certainly paid attention
Once my words began to flow.

"Now listen here, sonny boy!
This kitchen's nice and clean.
You've had enough to eat right now,
And I'm NOT your food machine!"

"So take a snack, I don't care what,
I just don't want to make it!
Have a cookie or some cake,
But don't ask me to bake it!"

With that he must have realised
That the wiser part of valour,
Was to beat a fast retreat
'Cause he'd turned a sickly pallor.

He didn't wait to push the point,
He just grabbed his cake and fled.
And as he went, I stopped and thought
'Bout those things that I'd just said.

I wonder what I would have done
If it wasn't Matt's request?
Would I have been so grudging
Had it been an honoured Guest?

And what if it were Jesus
Who had asked the same of me?
Why I'd lay the finest table -
Serve a banquet for His tea!

It would never be a bother
Or a hassle in my day.
I'd consider it an honour
To serve Jesus in this way.

Yet here's the thing we oft forget,
And it's not a passing whim,
Jesus said that when we serve someone
We'll be doing it for Him.

So with that picture in my mind
I'll change my attitude
And serve with grace and kindness
From a heart of gratitude.
