Bursting the Bubble of Pride

Toothbrush and Soap

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (17th March, 2004)

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
~ Proverbs 16:18 NIV ~

For some a puzzle stays just that --
An enigma best unsolved.
For others it's a problem that
Just has to be resolved.

For me, I guess it all depends
On what that puzzle is.
If Maths or Science are the key,
You'll find me in a tizz!

But when it comes to other things
Like making something work,
I'm like a bulldog with a bone
It's just my little quirk.

And that's the way it was the day
I volunteered to code
The church website again from scratch,
To ease our Pastor's load.

Now if I'd had the software
That our church used for the chore
It would have been a piece of cake -
A breeze and nothing more!

But I don't use a program when
I build my own website.
I code each page by hand, you see,
To make it look just right.

The problem was, I didn't know
Just how to set things out
To match the church's first design,
So I was filled with doubt!

Though simple in design, it was
Still quite a test for me
I had to learn 'bout "tables" and
Another thing or three!

It had me stumped, I will admit
For days and days it seemed.
But then I found the answer -
And my time had been redeemed!

I checked the page so carefully
Then quickly wrote a note,
To let our pastor know that I
Had reason now to gloat.

"It's done!" I wrote so joyfully
"Forget about the rest!
Scrap the other ones I sent
'Cause this one is the BEST!"

With one click the message went
Away through cyber-space.
It felt so good to know at last
I'd hit a perfect ace.

I was beaming still with pleasure
As I went to brush my teeth.
That day I'd "run" to glory and
Now wore the victor's wreath.

Oh what a heady feeling with
That sense of satisfaction.
If only I'd not let it be
A source of great distraction!

Still buzzing with the thought that I
Was really very clever
I stuck my toothbrush in my mouth,
As was each night's endeavour.

That's when I saw the tiny drop
Of liquid soap, so blue
Just lying on the bathroom sink
A slippery little clue.

"That wasn't there before", I thought,
As fearful dread arose,
With the dawn of revelation
When sweet perfume hit my nose.

As froth and bubbles filled my mouth
The taste came in behind -
A sour, salty, soapy blend
Is what best comes to mind.

"Oh BLECH!" I squealed and spat the foam
Into the bathroom sink.
I rinsed my mouth and rinsed again
Then took a great long drink!

On hearing the commotion
Matthew rushed into the room
And found his mother laughing
Like some wild, demented loon.

The words would hardly come out
I was really such a dope.
Instead of using toothpaste I'd
Just squirted liquid soap.

Between each fit of giggles
I finally did stutter,
"I was feeling oh so clever,
But I'm really just a nutter!"

And isn't that the way it goes
So often throughout life?
Just when we think we know it all
We get ourselves in strife.

For never truer were the words
That now I do recall,
A bighead is a sign of pride
That comes before a fall.

So if you're feeling mighty smart
'Bout something you've achieved
Give God the glory for it,
Or you may end up aggrieved.
