Thinking of You

Matthew's 16th Birthday

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (17th September, 2003)

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds."
~ Hebrews 10:24 NIV ~

Another birthday rolled around -
Our son was "sweet sixteen",
Though if he heard it labelled that
Matt just might make a scene!

Our little boy was growing fast,
With childhood days behind.
A world, unknown, before him
Not quite knowing what he'll find.

Emotions oft in turmoil
As he makes the big transition
Working out just where he fits;
His place and his position.

Birthdays are a turning point
And sixteen is so "cool".
But life continues on and so,
Matt had to go to school.

The day flew by so quickly.
He was home again so fast!
With news about the day he'd had,
From first thing to the last.

Birthday cheers from all his friends
Had kept him smiling true.
Though "birthday punches" on his arm
Had left him black and blue!

Matt finished his narration then
And went to take a break
Before the time to celebrate
With gifts and birthday cake.

But something brought him back again
To say just one thing more.
He was holding it within his hands,
And seemed a bit unsure.

It was a sheet of paper that
Was folded with great care.
The contents were a mystery
Matt wanted now to share.

He handed me the little note
So I could plainly see
The note was from a class mate
Not a "he", but from a "she".

Now I know the girl who wrote it;
She's a sweetheart, full of joy
And I knew she wrote it as a friend -
Not for romance with my boy.

"It's a poem," Matt explained.
"Sarah wanted me to see.
She said that when she read it
She thought straight away 'bout me."

With my son's permission granted
Sarah's note I did unfold
And read the words contained within
That missive I did hold.

The poem was a message that
Encouraged from the heart
To see that God made each of us
Quite perfect from the start.

It said the Lord made no mistakes -
All things were in His plan.
It spoke of how God smiled upon
The life of my young man.

The kindness of his friend had blessed
My son and that was clear.
As for me, I found it hard
To hide a threatening tear.

Sarah gave a special gift
To Matthew on his day.
She'd responded to God's prompting
Risking what others may say.

I said as much to Matthew,
But he shrugged and with a smile
Said, "Sarah's like that Mum, you see.
She goes the extra mile."

With the note back in his hands,
Matt went whistling out the door.
Leaving me to contemplate
On Sarah's gift some more.

To mind came all the many times
I'd thought of nice things too -
Ways to bless another heart,
But failed to carry through.

Encouragement does no good
If it stays as just a thought.
For kindness without action
Will only come to naught!

Who knows how many times I've let
A chance pass right on by
To cheer a friend upon their way
And instead not even try.

So next time someone comes to mind
I'll follow Sarah's lead
And not just "think" about them,
But step out and do the deed!
