Who's the Most Beautiful?

The Lord does not look at the things man looks at ...

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (26th April, 2003)

“The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
~ 1 Samuel 16:7b NIV ~

“We’ve got beautiful people,
Count them and see,
Twenty five of the best,
At the top of the tree!”

“All visions of loveliness -
We wouldn’t lie.
They’re the cream of the crop
Not a soul could deny!”

The magazine cover
Near screamed in my face.
Made me glad my subscription
Had finished its race!

Though this glossy journal
Avoids all the rot
Of gossip and scandal
That others think “hot”,

It does have a penchant
For features like this,
Where wealth, fame and beauty
Make up annual lists.

With a sigh I flicked through
The year’s choice selection
And most were good-looking,
Some close to “perfection”.

It was then that a smile
Caught my lips in a rush
‘Cause perfection’s a snap
If you’ve got an “air brush”.

And with that cheeky thought
I skimmed through the rest
‘Til the last page I reached
Of this weekly digest.

In a flash I had left
That rarefied world
Of wealth, fame and glamour;
Of beauty unfurled.

My heart held no envy,
And no wish to be
Anyone other than
Just plain, old “me”.

Still, my thoughts were awhirl
About what I’d just read.
Something had caused it
To stick in my head!

It wasn’t real hard to
Uncover just why
This magazine feature
Had left me quite dry.

See, they didn’t say “few”,
And they didn’t say “some”,
They said, “These are the MOST
Beautiful ones!”

Now how could they say that?
It all seemed contrived.
Did they search the whole world
For the best twenty-five?

And how did they measure?
What mark on the line?
Did they seek your opinion?
They didn’t ask mine!

Now to be fair I’ll say
That they did look within
And value the beauty
That’s under the skin.

They also were sure to
Not just look for youth
And included one who
Was quite “long in the tooth”!

But still, it’s subjective
Their judgment at best
Beauty is something
That’s too hard to test.

One opinion will count,
At the end of the day,
When pretence and glamour
Are all swept away.

As we stand before God,
Creator and King,
Who looks at our hearts -
Not external things.

The beauty He’ll see when
We kneel at His throne
Won’t be of ourselves,
But of Jesus alone.

If we have the Saviour
Residing within
God sees us as lovely –
Without any sin.

So don’t let the world
Try to make you conform
And reach for a standard
That isn’t the “norm”.

Just rest in the fact
(and this isn’t a whim)
In Christ you’re a winner -
Exquisite to Him!
