Cleaning Can Be Fun!

And it's not even Spring!

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter 26th January, 2003

"For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life."
~ 1 Thessalonians 4:7 NIV ~

It always hits me unprepared,
Like light'ning from the blue.
It strikes without much warning,
Like a virus, or the 'flu!

Some times I feel the symptoms brew,
Deep in the pre-dawn light
An odd and strange first stirring,
Coming with the end of night

And sure enough, with morning comes
A longing that's so keen,
To set my house in order,
To get busy, and to clean!

Then suddenly I want to see
Each bench-top, mirror, floor;
Sparkling with that gleaming light
That once they had before.

The children duck for cover,
Without a fond adieu
'Cause if they stay they'll have to work
Or worse, be dusted too!

So grabbing mop and dusting cloth,
The vacuum and a pail,
I eagerly begin the task -
Into the day I sail.

What really takes me by surprise
About these cleaning fits,
Is not the sudden need to clean,
But the joy that comes with it.

Sure, it demands some elbow grease,
My effort and my time,
But what reward it is to see
A house so free from grime!

With every little chore complete,
There is great satisfaction -
A real reward for my hard work
A prize for all my action!

Now I'm no "Mary Poppins" and
Would love to hire a maid,
To do the daily, boring chores
This Mother does unpaid.

But that's not going to happen,
So the onus is on me,
And I'm just thankful for the times
That cleaning is a breeze!

How easy it would be to let
The dust and mildew stay
On furniture and over tiles -
Just let it have its way.

It might be easy that's for sure,
But healthy? Hardly so!
For dirt brings germs and other things,
To make us ill, I know.

And so it is for each of us,
Who walk this Christian road.
To rid our lives of daily "grime",
Can seem a heavy load.

But what good news it is to know
The blessing of God's grace,
Has set us free from death and sin
In Him they are effaced.

For in our Lord, we each are made
Brand new and whole and clean.
The past has been forgotten,
All iniquity's unseen.

Yet, with this precious gift of life,
We can't afford to slacken,
And just continue on in sin,
For it's His name we blacken.

From that first day we let Him in
There's one response for sure,
No matter what we do or say,
Our lives need to be pure.

It's just a way of showing God
How thankful that we are
For all the work He's done in us;
Through Christ He's brought us far.

But staying clean in thought and deed
Is more than gratitude
Our lives will then reflect our Lord
In word and attitude.

So when you get those stirrings,
In the darkest hours of night,
To get your "house" in order,
Just give in without a fight.

The end result is worth it,
I am here to testify,
For in your life, the world will see
The Lord is glorified.
