Living Beyond the Veil

Debbie on her Wedding Day - 4th September, 1982

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
~ Genesis 2:24 NIV ~

It wasn't for nostalgia that
I searched both high and low,
And I wasn't feeling misty from
Sweet thoughts of long ago.

Yet still I riffled through the shelves,
With just one goal to find
The little bit of tulle I'd worn
That day our lives entwined.

Now I guess it seems romantic -
I know it looks that way,
And so much more as we approach
Our anniversary day.

However, it was not for me,
That I went on that trail.
It was my darling daughter who
Had need to use the veil.

But before you get excited,
She's not heading down the aisle
At seventeen I think that she's
Still got a little while!

No, it wasn't for a wedding,
That had made our Kylie ask.
It was for a school assignment -
Just some photographic task.

And so I stood upon a stool
To reach right to the back
Of the wardrobe's hidden places,
Where it all seemed dark and black.

Then just as I was thinking
That perhaps the veil I'd tossed,
I put my hand upon it and
Was glad it wasn't lost.

It wasn't stored within a box,
'Tween sheets of tissue fine.
Its home had been a plastic bag -
You know, the shopping kind.

"Oh dear!" I thought with some regret,
As I went to look within,
"I have a feeling this may be
A tattered, yellow thing!"

Crumpled, yes, the netting was,
But the purest white remained,
And like the foam upon a wave
It billowed unrestrained.

The sight of it was just too much,
As memories flooded through.
It begged to be worn once again
Like when it was brand new.

With almost guilty secrecy,
I set the veil in place
Upon the head that after all,
It was designed to grace.

How very young I'd been back then
Just two score years and one,
Near twenty more have passed by since
Our wedded life begun.

Though that day is fresh and clear,
Within my heart stored deep,
The bedroom mirror showed that time
Speeds by, it doesn't creep.

Not just the tulle was wrinkled,
I had "creases" of my own!
The veil seemed to accentuate
How fast the years had flown.

With a sigh I took it off,
And thought about my life
The many roads I've walked upon,
Since I became Steve's wife.

The good and bad, the high and low,
Have all, at times, been ours,
And I wouldn't change a minute,
Not the sunshine or the showers.

September four, in eighty-two.
That was our special day,
When together we united,
Pledged our love would always stay.

Those vows we took are standing firm,
Though we've put them to the test,
When we've let our disagreements
Rob us of the very best.

But as we've grown we've learnt to let
Forgiveness be our rule,
And not hold onto anger 'cause
That really is too cruel.

God's grace has shown us how to live,
Since we first let Him in.
And from that day our twosome's been
A trio with our King!

So with a smile I folded up
The headdress, now quite frail,
And thanked the Father for these years
I've lived beyond the veil.
