Your Joy is Complete.

Sing for Joy to the Lord

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete."
~ John 15:10-11 NIV ~

What a gift from God we have
In music and in song.
So often it just says the things
That in our hearts we long.

Swirling round us like a wave,
With ripples, falls and rises.
Gentle, wild or inbetween,
It comes in many guises.

The greatest music yet, I feel
Will always be the one,
That glorifies the Father,
Holy Spirit and the Son.

And though I know that worship is
Expressed in many ways,
I've always found it easiest
To sing to God my praise.

So every day I fill the air
With love songs to my King.
The words are given freely as
A simple offering.

But every now and then I have
A need for something brassy.
Now and then I even want
A sound that's much more classy!

That's when I take a visit to
A favourite on-line site
With a plethora of music
It's a guaranteed delight!

Big band, swing and classical,
Jazz and country too.
The choices all seem endless,
And there's always something new.

Best of all about this place
(Its name is MP3)
There's lots of unknown musos
Who will share their songs for free!

But just the other day I found
A genre that seemed odd.
It wasn't grunge or punk or goth -
No, this was meant for God

It was such an oxymoron -
The words just seemed to jar.
Or I guess it could be me,
Still, it did look quite bizarre.

By now I guess you're wondering,
So I'm here to share the news,
That in the world of music
There's a thing called "Christian Blues"!

Now maybe I don't understand,
I might have missed some thing.
So I went and asked an expert
Who just quoted B.B. King.

It seems "The Blues" is all about,
An anger deep within -
Against shame, humiliation,
And all the pain they bring.

The style of music sets it up
To be quite melancholy
Forget it if you're looking for
A tune to make things jolly!

So that's about the way it goes,
In musical tradition,
But I turned to "Mr. Webster"
For another definition.

There in black and white it stated
Clearly so I'd know,
That to have the "blues" was always
When your spirit's kind of low.

Now all of us are down at times,
And even in the pits
There may be even times we feel
We want to call it quits!

But take it from someone who knows
That lonely misery,
It was never God's intention
That this be our destiny.

The Christian life is not always
A carefree, even jaunt.
If we were left to walk alone
The path would seem to daunt.

The things we want don't always seem
To go the way we hope
But when we let depression in,
We lose the will to cope.

So if "the blues" come calling, please
Give credit where it's due
Circumstances, maybe health,
Or even "you know who".

But "Christian Blues"?  How can it be?
It doesn't make much sense.
To join those words together
Almost seems like an offence.

So let's be careful not to link
Our Saviour with the ploy
Of sorrow and depression,
For He came to bring us joy!
