Surviving an Attack of the ...

Grace or the Gavel?

... Grace Killers

Poem Copyrighted - Debbie Porter (2002)

"And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace"
~ Romans 11:6 NIV ~

"I'm so confused," the young girl said.
I could see it on her face.
This was not some casual visit
That had brought her to my place.

I waited as she got her thoughts
Together now for sharing.
I prayed that I may somehow help
To ease the load she's bearing.

"The last two years have been so hard,
Mrs. P, I know you know.
You've seen my biggest battles,
All those times I felt so low."

And as she talked, my memories flowed
Of all that she'd been through
And the love of her dear family
Which had stayed so very true.

The road she'd walked had not been smooth,
She'd tripped along the way.
To insecurity and fear
She had become their prey.

But things had changed in recent months.
God's love had made a start
To bring her peace and confidence,
And heal her hurting heart.

She had begun to hear His voice
And believed what He did say.
New dreams and hopes had filled her
For a brighter, better day.

There'd been a spring back in her step,
And laughter in her voice.
Small things I know, and yet they were
A reason to rejoice.

So what on earth had happened now
To cloud her eyes with doubt?
What was it that was leading her
Back to that place of drought?

Her soulful eyes gazed into mine,
They pierced me deep inside,
Then finally she opened up,
That's when she did confide.

"This week I felt so happy,
Really joyful and alive.
For the first time in so very long
I knew that I'd survive!"

"At last it seemed like everything
Was falling into line.
New job, new love, new future.
I was feeling really fine."

"Then *Kerry rang to check on me,
I know it's 'cause she cares.
But ever since, it's like the sun
Has disappeared upstairs!"

With that my friend repeated all
The older girl had said,
Every little word that now
Was locked inside her head.

She'd criticised this fragile child,
In a nice way to be sure,
'Bout missing church last Sunday
And then a whole lot more!

She took it on herself to judge
Another person's heart
She'd weighed it by the works she saw -
But that was just the start!

Kerry aimed and fired her words
At all those hopes and dreams
She shot like an assassin,
Didn't hear her victim's screams.

How easy it would be for me
To get angry at the one,
Who seemed to take real pleasure,
At this game of hit and run.

But I know the heart of Kerry,
How she cares for younger girls
And wants to see them growing
Which is why she shares her "pearls".

The trouble is that in her zeal
There's something out of place.
When we're ruled by regulations
There just isn't room for grace.

"Well," I said, as carefully
I began to bring God's rain
Back to those desert places,
So that they could bloom again.

"You know the last time that I checked,
The Bible made it clear
That no man ever has the right
To fill our hearts with fear."

"For only God alone can judge
Our motives deep within.
And only He can ever say
What is and isn't sin."

"You know that in these recent weeks,
He's been so close to you.
You've heard His gentle whispers
Showing you just what to do."

"Now precious girl, you can't allow
The enemy to steal
Those hopes and dreams of promise
'Cause you know that they are real."

"Grace killers lurk around us and
We have to know our place,
For in Christ we have real freedom
We aren't children of disgrace."

"Now here's a thing that I have learnt
To help my mind stay free -
Sometimes the ones who hurt the most
Are Christians just like me."

"Don't always take on everything
That others say to you.
Weigh each thing and understand
God's Word alone is true."

"So when advice is offered,
and It hits just like big stones,
Use wisdom and discernment -
Eat the meat, spit out the bones!"
